Pat Crew founded this Retro SOM League starting with the 1959 season. He asked Gary Roberts to take over administration the next season and we have completed 15 seasons since the inception. The State College team managed by Rick Baily and the Macon team managed by Gary Roberts are the only 2 original owners still in the league which feature 16 teams in 4 divisions.
The league operates on a 9 month calendar with a 6 month 162 game season and 3 months for playoffs, trades and the Free Agent draft. The lower 4 teams in standing may protect 7 players and the other 12 teams may only protect 5 players. Each team is associated with a major league team and every year rookies are allocated from that team to the Retro team. They may protect all that they want but the roster limit is 32 with free agent drafts included. The Retro teams stadium is from the MLB franchise also.
Managers have stabilized in recent years and we will expand for the 1975 season with a draft for 4 teams in April 2010. The league uses the Strat-O-Matic computer baseball game.
The 1971 champion was the Florida Flamingos managed by Paul Ivice while the Hamburg Rosedanders of Ed Taylor are the 1972 champion. The 1973 champion is once again the Florida Flamingos managed by Paul Ivice. The LCS went to 7 games after Round Rock went down 3-0 and rallied back to force a seventh game which went to Florida in the 12th inning. NetPlay was used for the series.
